Mr. Roy Thomas Winters, of New Market, passed away peacefully on his 83rd birthday, Monday, March 17, 2014 at home surrounded by his beloved family. He was the loving husband of 61 years to Ann Louise Potter Winters.
Born March 17, 1931 in Swanton, MD, he was the son of the late Luther Calvin and Josephine Rhodes Winters.
Roy retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 36 years. He began his career as a letter carrier before transferring to the Vehicle Maintenance Facility. He also owned and operated Winters Garage for 45 years. Roy was well known for his mechanical expertise. There was nothing he couldn't fix.
He enjoyed fishing, especially on his beloved Vera Bee on the Chesapeake Bay. His other hobbies included reading and watching anything about WWII, and old cars.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Alan "Bud" Winters and fiancé, Cheryl Wiles; daughter, Phyllis Baker and husband, John; four grandchildren, LTJG Timothy Baker, USN, Katie and (Shawn) Kent, Kellie Baker, and Margaret L. Winters; and many nieces, nephews and valued family friends.
Roy was predeceased by six brothers, Claude, Carl, John, Earl, Lawrence, and Arthur; and one sister, Hallie Weimer.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. John Vitarello and Dr. Hiren Shah and all members of the Health Care Team who cared for him over the years.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2014 from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ross Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
