Mrs. Rowena Mayse Cremeans died on Tuesday, January 27, at her home in Frederick, Maryland. She was the beloved wife of C. Odell Cremeans, who predeceased her in 2001. Born in Jackson County, Kentucky, on July 10, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Rosa Griffith Mayse and the late Patrick Mayse.
Mrs. Cremeans was a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. While her husband served in the Marine Corps during World War II, Mrs. Cremeans taught high school English and Physical Education and helped with the war effort.
Following the war, she and her husband moved to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and ultimately settled in Bethesda, Maryland. While living in Bethesda, she was active with the National Capital Area Girl Scouts and she served as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County. She was a member of the Cedar Lane Unitarian Church, the Glenwood Road Garden Club, and the Washington, D.C., alumnae chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha.
In 1984, while working for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, she and her husband moved to New Market, Maryland. Mrs. Cremeans' last professional position was working with the Frederick County Job Training Agency. In addition, she volunteered as a tutor for the Frederick County Literacy Council. Mrs. Cremeans was an avid reader and enjoyed being an active participant with her book club.
Mrs. Cremeans is survived by her daughter, Pamela Cremeans Robey (Robert), by her granddaughter, Rebecca Robey Steen (Jon), and by her sister, Lucille McNeely (Pete). Mrs. Cremeans was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 7, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the ceremony. Interment at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville, Maryland, will be private.
