Rose Williar Powell

Rose Marie Powell of Lewistown, MD, was promoted to heaven's glory on November 8, 2016. She was 84 years old.
Born August 2, 1932 in Mount Airy, MD, she was the daughter of the late Alton A.T. & Hilda Ruth Warner Williar and the wife of the late Alton C. (Chiz) Powell. She was a graduate of the New Windsor High School in 1949. After working at Bennett's Dept. Store for 9 years, she enrolled at the Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for 3 years and became a registered nurse in 1963.
She was a very active member of the Lewistown United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir for 25 years and helped on many committees.
She belonged to the Rainbow Bells (a group of widows) and was an Honorary Member of the Lewistown Vol. Fire Department, where she patted oysters for their suppers. She and her husband also belonged to the Thurmont Senior Citizens, where they loved taking many bus trips with a fun group of people and also playing "Julia Childs" at nursing homes and clubs.
Her other adventures included clerking for the Poultry Judge at the Frederick Fair, puppetry for children, writing humorous poems, fishing & camping with friends and playing cards with her Tuesday card group.
Her greatest joy was her family! And everyone benefited from her warm hospitality and good cooking! She is survived by her beloved daughter, Bonnie Frey & husband Donald of Middletown and her 3 loving step-sons, Carroll A. Powell of Lewistown, Ronald C. Powell of Frederick and Donald A. Powell, Sr. of Emmitsburg as well as grandchildren: Christopher Frey & wife Katie of Woodsboro, Corey Frey & wife Christy of Pensacola, FL, Nicholas Frey & wife Mya of Frederick, Camelia Powell of Lewistown, Billy Powell & wife Krista of Harper's Ferry, WV, Zachary Powell of Hagerstown and Tessa Hoover & husband Joe of Mechanicsburg, PA. She is also survived by 6 darling great-grandchildren, her loving sister & pal, Doris Ashenfelter, brother, J. Ross Williar, sister-in-law, Helen Powell, her aunt Vivian Warner along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband, she is pre-deceased by her brother, Alton Williar, Jr., sweet sister and her husband Faye and Edward Krantz, daughter-in-law Marcy Powell, brothers-in-law Dick Ashenfelter & Kenneth Powell, grandson Donald Powell, Jr., great-granddaughter Codie Powell and nephew Shane Krantz.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 12 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont, MD. A memorial service will immediately follow, promptly at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lewistown United Methodist Church at 11032 Hessong Bridge Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.
