Ronald Eugene Kuhn, Sr.

May 25, 1953 — May 11, 2024

Thurmont

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Ronald Eugene Kuhn Sr., 70, of Thurmont Maryland died unexpectedly in his home in Thurmont on May 11, 2024.

Ron was born May 25, 1953, to the late Edward Jerald Kuhn and Phyllis Irene (Law) Kuhn. He grew up in Sabillasville where he accumulated countless stories of running wild in the mountains, carrying-on and participating in youthful shenanigans. As an adolescent and young adult, he worked for his friend and mentor Mister Francis Manahan at Manahan’s General Store in Sabillasville; his relationship with Francis was formative. He graduated from Catoctin High School in 1972. In 1970, he met his high school sweetheart, best friend, and future wife of 50 years, Debra (Reckley) Kuhn of Thurmont.

Known for his generous nature, he was quick to give and volunteer his time to help others. He was a devoted volunteer for National Cancer Survivors Day, and American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Ron liked people and he would talk to anyone and everyone he met. Ron enjoyed teasing his friends, family, and strangers. He was quick to laugh and generally preferred having a good time. Ron was a tinkerer who enjoyed many hobbies and started many projects, but perhaps will be best known for his love of playing and watching football, collecting sports memorabilia, working on muscle cars, wood carving, and watching John Wayne movies. He was a good gardener and grew fantastic tomatoes. He was a wonderful cook and baker and took great delight in preparing and providing meals for his family. Ron had a simple prospective and philosophy on life - that some things matter, but many things don’t. He mattered very much to his friend and family, and he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters Rebecca Kindle, Cathy Ditch, and Patsy Stine, as well as his brothers Dennis Kuhn and Robert Kuhn, and two of his best friends, Bill Long and Mike Buhrman.

He is survived by sisters Margaret Anne Keyser, Rosa Miller, and Barbara Cox and her husband Sean; his brothers Edward Kuhn and wife Fay, Richard Kuhn and wife Linda; his children Ronald Kuhn Jr., Kellie Kuhn and her husband Daniel Detzi, and Rebecca Kuhn; and granddaughters Mycayla Lankford and Lillian “Lily” Maier; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He will be greatly missed by his granddaughter Lily.

His family is deeply indebted to Emmitsburg Vigilant Hose Company 6 and Frederick County EMS for their valiant efforts. They are also sincerely and deeply grateful for the loving respect and care provided by Steve and Rachael Hess.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Stauffer Funeral Home, Thurmont, MD.
Ron will be buried in a private family ceremony.

A celebration of Ron's life will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at MorningStar Family Church, 14698 Albert Staub Road, Thurmont. All are welcome to attend. We kindly request RSVPs by May 19th at https://ronkuhn.weebly.com/.
Given Ron’s volunteer work to combat cancer, his family asks that donations be directed to the National Cancer Society or the Patient Assistance Fund at the James M. Stockman Cancer Institute.
