Roland Smith

May 27, 1931 — July 17, 2019

Roland E. Smith, 88, of Thurmont, died on Wednesday, July 17, at his home.  He was the husband to the late Barbara Jane (Graham) Smith, whom he married on June 16, 1951.  Born on May 27, 1931, in LeGore, he was the son of Charles Monroe Smith and Emma Marie (Ambrose) Smith.

In early years, he worked for Glade Valley Milling Company and helped out on many farms.  In 1965, he went to farming on his own with just he and his wife Barbara working side by side.  After farming, he worked for North Glade Feed Company and Cargills until his retirement.  He coached and played on many softball teams, Rocky Ridge Vol. Fire Company, Village Store, North Glade Feed and Gargills.  He enjoyed socializing with his friends at the Woodsboro American Legion and at the Walkersville Bowling Alley.  He was a fan and loved his Boston Red Sox and Green Bay Packers.

He is survived by daughter, Sandra K. Hirsch and husband Ed; grandson, Christopher Lyn Masemore and wife Kasey, granddaughter, Tara Lynne Colacioppo and husband Joe; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn & Evan Masemore and Tyler & Lilly Colacioppo; brother, Charles Monroe Smith, Jr. and sister, Helen Virginia as well as special nieces and nephew, Patty Bowers, Susie Smith and Joe Kula.  He also leaves behind special cousins Vicki Ambrose and Barbara Beard.  In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son Roland E. Smith, Jr., brothers-in-law Arthur Graham and Joe Kula and sisters-in-law Shirley Graham and Thelma Kula as well as his favorite uncle Hop and aunt Cass Ambrose.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 19, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 20 at 11:00 am in the chapel of the funeral home, Rev. Tim May officiating.  The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service.  Interment will be in Glade Cemetery.
