Roby Bowman

April 13, 1922 — September 25, 2018

Bowman, Roby Wilson, age 96, of Poplar Springs, MD passed away on September 25, 2018 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy, MD.

He was born on April 13, 1922 at his family's farm to his parents, Augustus Lee Bowman, Jr. and Bessie Elizabeth (Gillis) Bowman.  He was the 11th of 12 children.

He was predeceased by his 9 brothers and 2 sisters:  Lee, Ellen, George, Mary Francis, Gus, Stanley, Dick, Benson, Baz, Nice, and Bubby Bowman.

As a child, he attended Jennings Chapel UMC and the Florence one-room school.  Roby lived his entire life on the family farm only having to leave for training to serve in the Navy in Virginia as a 22 year old.  He returned home to work on the farm and for the Western Maryland Dairy driving a truck picking up milk from the area farms.  When his mother passed away he was given lifetime rights on the farm and charged to keep the farm operating as a family farm to be passed down to her lineal descendants, a charge that he was able to meet with the help of a few of his nephews and his neighbors on the Knill Farm.  Roby had a remarkable memory.  He was a wonderful help to his niece, providing information for the family Genealogy, again when she was researching and writing the history of Poplar Springs for the Howard County book, " Howard's Roads to the Past", and once again when she worked with the Maryland Office of Planning on the Historical National Road wayfinding signs for Lisbon, Poplar Springs, and Ridgeville.

The family expresses thanks to Doris Bowman, his sister-in-law, for her years of service as Power of Attorney for his health care and finances, and to the staff of Pleasant View Nursing Home for their loving care during the last months of his life.  They also appreciate his friends who took their time to visit with him.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, MD 21771 on Monday, October 1, 2018 from 4-7 p.m.

Graveside services will be held at the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.  Pastor Robert Cook will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy may be offered at StaufferFuneralHome.com.
