Robert {Bob} Bernard Flanigan

April 28, 1921 — August 30, 2009

Mr. Robert (Bob) Bernard Flanigan, 88, of Mount Airy, died August 30, 2009, at his home. He was the much-loved husband of Carole Cleveland Flanigan.

Born April 28, 1921, near Clarksburg, WV, he was the son of the late Zina and Bessie (Ash) Flanigan.

Mr. Flanigan attended schools in West Virginia and moved to Baltimore at age eighteen, working at Sparrows Point for three or four years before joining the Army Air Corps. He proudly served his country in the CID during World War II, and, following his honorable discharge, began his career. Having graduated from Johns Hopkins University, earning a degree in mechanical engineering, he joined the ranks at Westinghouse where he remained for twenty-eight years. When his division was eliminated, rather than move to another location, he joined General Motors on Broening Highway and worked for another fourteen years before retiring in 1986.

Mr. Flanigan also found time to run a couple of his own businesses, to target shoot (he was an Expert Marksman), and to ballroom dance (even learning how to teach dancing with Arthur Murray). He met his wife of twenty-three years while dancing, and they competed as amateurs in International Style Latin dance. Bob was a member of Damascus Grace Fellowship where he had served as a deacon.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two stepsons, Michael William Shriner and wife Robin of Hagerstown, and Donald Matthew Shriner and fiancee Dee Dee Clark of Greencastle, PA; seven grandchildren, Stephen Michael Shriner of Middletown, Conner Matthew Shriner, Jonathan William Shriner and Madison Paige Lewis of Hagerstown, Victoria Morgan Shriner and Colby Miles Shriner of Ripley, WV and Ashley Nicole Rimbey of Mount Airy; his brother Lester Flanigan and wife Josefa of Baltimore; daughter-in-law Maureen Flanigan and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Lane Flanigan, his grandson, Curtis Lane Flanigan, and his brother Dale Flanigan.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm on Wednesday, September 2, at Stauffers Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd, Mount Airy, MD.

Services: Funeral services will be at 11:00am on Thursday, September 3, at Damascus Grace Fellowship, 8425 Damascus Road, Damascus, MD. Dave VandeVere, pastor of Damascus Grace, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Flanigan's name to the Robert Flanigan Education Fund at Damascus Grace Fellowship, Frederick County Hospice, or to a charity of one's choice.
