Robert A. Redmond, Dr. Bob, 68, died on May 5, 2007 after a long struggle with lung cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Patricia Tyson Redmond.
Born on December 30, 1938, in Utica, NY, he was the son of the late Dr. Albert and Louise (Wingert) Redmond, and stepmother Nancy (Congleton) Redmond. Also surviving him are three children; Jacqueline Overton (Jeff) of Suffolk, VA, Robert Redmond (Amanda Critelli) of Herndon, VA, and Dr. Erin Redmond Webb (Ramsey) of Frederick. His family also includes 8 grandchildren; Joshua, Jessica, Julia, Jenna, and Josie Overton, Cameron and Caleigh Kilby Redmond, and Raimi Webb; a twin sister, Dr. Sandra Redmond, sisters Carole Beckwith (Ken), & Elizabeth Redmond, step-brother, Doug Redmond (Barbara) & step-sister, Margaret Hopkins (John). He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Redmond Kilby, and a brother, Richard Redmond.
Dr. Bob was graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1962 with a BS in Engineering, from Indiana University in 1973 with a Master's Degree in Biomechanics, from George Washington University in 1985 with a Master's Degree in Cardiovascular Physiology, and from the University of Maryland in 1991 with a PhD in Exercise Physiology with specialties in cardiovascular and metabolic physiology.
He had a 20 year career in the US Army when he retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1982. He served tours of duty in Europe, Korea, Japan and various installations in the United States as well as combat tours in Vietnam with Special Forces (Green Beret) and Field Artillery. During his four tours in Vietnam he was exposed to Agent Orange which caused his cancer. He was an Assistant Professor in the Physical Education Department at West Point from 1973-1977 where he met and married Pati in 1974. They were stationed in Japan in 1977-80 and then lived in Springfield, VA for 20 years. He owned and operated the largest windsurfing school on the East Coast at the Washington Sailing Marina in Alexandria, VA. He was a Master Instructor for US Sailing Association and wrote instructional manuals for windsurfing.
His last retirement was from the position of Vice President of Operations of the Frederick YMCA, a job which brought him to Frederick in 2000.
Dr. Bob was very active at Trinity United Methodist Church where he started a Men's Group, and was a 20 year member of Burke United Methodist Church in Burke, VA. He was Service Officer at the VFW, and was active in the West Point Alumni Society and the West Point Class of '62. He loved working out at the YMCA, playing golf, skiing, traveling in his RV, and giving back to his community.
Visitation: Family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Tuesday, May 8 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM.
Services:
A service in celebration of Dr. Bob's life will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church on W. Patrick St., with the Rev Dr. Harold Wright II officiating, on Wednesday, May 9 at 1:00 PM with visitation one hour prior.
Interment with full honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery on July 17, 2007 at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Bob's name to the Frederick County YMCA Scholarship Fund, 1000 N. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701.
