Roberta Officer

Roberta Janet Carney Officer, 88, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2013, the birthday of her recently deceased husband. Born on October 24, 1925 in Algona, Iowa, she was the eldest of Edward R. and Mildred Brothers Carney’s four children.

During World War II, when she was a junior at college in Iowa, she married her husband of sixty-eight years, Wallace B. Officer, while he attended Harvard University. During his career as a Naval Officer, they traveled and lived around the world, raising five children. She was a natural leader, and as her husband rose in military rank she assumed a counterpart role in the Naval community.

She was an award-winning swimmer and diver, as well as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames.

She was a woman of great grace, kindness and generosity, and a loving wife and mother.  She will be profoundly missed by her family and those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her five children, Pamela Officer-Greco, her husband James Greco of Columbia, MD, their daughter Sandi Stoker, her husband Kenneth, their children Regan, Ryan and Stephanie; Bret Officer, his wife Dianne of Sharpsburg, MD, their two children Ryan and Marie; Mark Officer, his wife Carol of Braddock Heights, MD, their son Scott Officer, daughter Jennifer Officer Aud, husband Jason, their daughter Hadley; Colleen Officer, her husband Grant Holt of St. Louis, MO, daughters Alexandra Eldredge, Katherine Holt, Molly Holt, grand-daughter Paige; Janet Officer, her husband Daniel Huebner of Frederick, MD, their two children Emily and Thomas; as well as her brother Edward Carney and sister Jane Carney Reynolds.   Sadly, she was preceded in death by her brother Chauncey Carney.

Her family will receive friends for a celebration of life visitation on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Stauffer Family Services, (formerly Dailey and Son Funeral Home) 1201 North Market Street, Frederick .

Her ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in May of 2014 along with those of her recently deceased husband, Wallace B.
