R. John Yates, 63, of Frederick, Maryland died peacefully at home after a courageous and determined journey to live with a terminal cancer diagnosis. He was the soul mate and husband of Deborah Winters Yates, the father of Amoreena Yates-Barks and her husband Christopher, stepfather of Carlee Coburn Kaufman and her husband James, and Jamie Coburn Baker, his daughter and nurse for many months. Denyse and Terry Brown, Gene and Pat Winters, Earl and Marsha Winters, and his gambling buddies, Elise and Earl Winters loved him dearly, as did many nieces and nephews. Their constant love and support was a source of joy to John. In his final weeks, a special individual entered our lives-Daryl Ramey, giving him care and compassion that brought John much peace.
The focus of John’s life after his diagnosis was to make lasting memories with his beautiful grandchildren, Taylor, Evan, Danielle, Donovan, Kelsey and Dallas, to whom he was “Papa.”
A former Marine, John served two tours in Vietnam. Following his military career he dedicated his life to serving troubled youth in several states through his careers with the Maryland Department of Corrections, the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and North American Family Institute (NAFI). He found his niche with NAFI, and was able to use all of his talents, expertise and passion to make a difference in the lives of many.
Throughout his cancer treatment he received unconditional compassion and the greatest care from everyone he met. John would like to express his eternal thanks to Dr. Karen Hundemer and Julie, to Dr. Yun Oh and the special staff at the Cancer Care Center of Frederick, to the staff at Frederick Memorial Hospital, the Ambulance Crew of Independent Hose Company and to Dr. Eric Bush, Gena, and the caring staff of Hospice of Frederick County.
And in his death John will continue to serve youth, as he requests those wishing make donations to “Camp Jamie,” a special weekend experience for grieving children, in care of Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Avenue, Frederick, MD 21702
