Lieutenant Colonel Robert R. “Bob” Turman, 73, of Ijamsville, MD, died peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on April 15, 2015 at his home.
Born July 9, 1941 in Woodbury, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Rex Cole and Rachel Vance Turman. On August 25, 1963 Mr. Turman married his wife, Sharon Lee Turman and they had been happily married 51 years.
Lieutenant Colonel Turman proudly served 25 years in the US Army, earning the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster) and the Army Commendation Medal, among other awards. His various assignments included a combat tour in Vietnam in 1966. After his retirement from the US Army, he served in the federal government for another 20 years, specifically at the Department of Health and Human Services, where he helped shape budget and policy for mental health and substance abuse treatment programs.
Mr. Turman was a member of and served as an Elder for the Hyattstown Christian Church where he was also an enthusiastic member of the choir and enjoyed the Men’s Fellowship Group.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Wm. Andrew Turman and wife, Rebecca, of Ijamsville and one daughter, Liane M. Turman of Lancaster, CA; one grandson, Harper Turman; and sisters, Cornelia Bain of Nashville, TN and Coleen Bertsch of Joppatowne, MD.
He was predeceased by one brother, Elijah Turman of Memphis, TN.
Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25th at the Hyattstown Christian Church in Clarksburg, MD with the Rev. Lisa K. Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday at the church one hour prior to services and following the service with a reception brunch.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made for the charitable outreach programs at Mr. Turman’s church, Hyattstown Christian Church, 26012 Frederick Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
