Robert Martin Rosen

Left to carry on his legacy, character, strength, traditions and commitment to his family are his daughter, Phyllis Rae Rosen of Walkersville, Maryland; son, Jay Howard Rosen, wife Catherine, grandson Liam Jayson of Portland, Oregon; son, Lawrence Paul Rosen of Richmond, Virginia; his grandson, Charles Ryan of Seattle, Washington; and his granddaughter, Allison Marie of San Francisco, California. Additionally, he will be fondly remembered by his stepchildren Sharryn Ross and husband, Jon Truslow of Boston, Massachusetts and children, Howard Ross and wife, Leslie Traub of Silver Spring, Maryland and children, and Robbie Ross-Tisch and husband, Daniel Tisch of Bethesda, Maryland and a host of other relatives and friends. Robert (Bob) was predeceased by his first wife of 45 years, Edna Betty (Katz) and second wife, Irene Bulmash (Ross) of 17 years as well as his mother, Anna Zangwill Rosen-Hoffman; sister, Ada Levine; brother, Joseph Rosen; and sister, Rae Rosen. He is survived by one sister, Miriam Malchick and husband, David, of Cornwall, New York.
Robert was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He starred in football at Seward Park and Alexander Hamilton High Schools and was named to New York's "Schoolboy Hall of Fame" in 1939 for his outstanding offensive and defensive play. He joined the Army at the start of World War II, landed at Omaha Beach during D-Day Operations and was attached to the 40th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad based in Fougeres, France. He served valiantly, removing and disarming unexploded bombs across France. He was also a skilled safecracker, retrieving valuable enemy documents for the war effort. In 1944, he was awarded the Soldier's Medal for his bravery and "complete disregard for personal safety" while extinguishing a fire in a weapons and ammunition cache in Brittany, France.
A graduate of New York University in 1950, Robert raised his family in Rockville, Maryland and had a distinguished career with the federal government working in the Pentagon for the Department of the Army. He had the distinction of being one of the first civilians to graduate from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He received his Master’s Degree from George Washington University. In retirement he resided in Sunrise, Coconut Creek, and Pompano Beach, Florida.
An avid boater and fisherman, Robert enjoyed camping with his family, woodworking, creating stained glass art and traveling the world for both business and pleasure. A great dancer, he spoke several languages and was a member of the Samuel Gompers-Benjamin Franklin Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services will be held at The Star of David Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Funeral Chapel, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, Florida on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 1:45 p.m. Following his burial, friends and loved ones will be received at the home of Stuart and Linda Kryshka in Parkland, Florida. Shiva will be observed at his daughter's home on Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m.
