Robert Worth Oakes, 88, of Rohrersville, Maryland passed from this life on February 7, 2020 at his home. He was the beloved very devoted husband of the late Alice Oakes for 65 years. He visited her daily when she moved to nursing care.
Born on October 2, 1931 in Gapland, Maryland, he was the son of the late Edward Lee and Grace Virginia (Crowl) Oakes. Robert served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War where he served as the rank of Sergeant. Following his service, he worked for the United States Postal Service as a clerk for 30 years, and for Nationwide Insurance for 10 years. He was a member of the Brownsville Church of the Brethren where he served in many capacities as a deacon and chairman of the board. He was also a member of the Boonsboro American Legion, past President of the Ruritan and a member of the Order of the Free Masons. Robert was an Orioles fan, watching them every evening and every chance he got.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Denise M. Painter and Doug Ridenour; grandchildren, Branden M. Painter and wife Nicky and Chelsea L. Painter and fiancée Jacob Hendricks; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Bryce Painter and Raleigh Hendricks and nieces.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by, his sister, Wanda Lee Huffer.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland 21713.
A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Knoxville, Maryland 21758. Interment will follow in the joining church cemetery. Pastor Alan Smith will officiate.
