Robert William Newton, 85, of Smithsburg, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025. 

Born on April 13, 1939, in Darby, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph Stokes and Elfleda Gertrude (Guthrie) Newton. 

Robert was a 1957 graduate of Upper Darby High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church of Smithsburg. Robert was a Communications Engineer for 35 years at AT&T, a reserve Deputy Sheriff of Anne Arundel Co., MD and was the owner of Newton's Gun Shop. He served as Secretary for the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Department and President of the Hagerstown chapter of PWP. Robert was also an Armorer at Ft. Liberty, NC. In his spare time he was an avid collector of all things and loved road trips. 

He is survived by three children, Laura McClure and husband Marc, Robert Newton, Jr. and wife Stephanie, Linda Cavanaugh and husband Craig; grandchildren, Justin Langlotz, Kyle McClure (Alejandrina), Allyson McClure, Dalton Condo, Travis Newton, Karly Barnes (Brandon);great-grandchildren, Robert, Ariel, and Kyleigh Langlotz; siblings, JoAnn Hunn, Lynne Gore, and Thomas Newton. He will also be remembered by his special friends Ann Holtzman and Pam Clay. 

He was preceded in death by his grandson Cody Ferguson and brother-in-law Walter Hunn. 

Services and interment are private.
