Mr. Robert Paul Higdon, Sr. of Frederick, formerly of Mt. Airy, and Gaithersburg, MD died December 20, 2014 in Mount Airy, MD. He was the husband of the late Kathleen Ruth (Baranowske) Higdon who passed away in May 2005.
Born September 18, 1921 in Bristow, Oklahoma, he was the son of Robert Byrd and Beulah Marie (Cook) Higdon. He spent most of his youth living in Okmulgee, Oklahoma just 50 miles south of Tulsa. He was a graduate of Okmulgee High School. Mr. Higdon was drafted in to the U. S. Army in August 1942 during WWII serving with Company B, 804th Military Police Battalion reaching the rank of Sergeant. He received the WWII Victory Medal and the American Theater Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After WWII he moved back to Oklahoma, but finding no work there, he moved to Gaithersburg, MD. He went to work for the Army Map Service in Washington DC and eventually, with the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center in Virginia near the Pentagon. He retired from the federal government in 1972 and went to work for Hechinger’s, a hardware and lumber company, until 1990 when he retired again. He was a member of the Washington Grove Methodist Church in Washington Grove, MD since 1946, where he served as treasurer and vice-president for many years. Upon the death of his wife of over 60 years, he moved to Mt. Airy where he became a member of the Calvary Methodist Church in 2006. He enjoyed wood working, carving ducks and making many things from leather. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. He was a big fan of the Oklahoma Sooners Football Team and the Washington Redskins. He was the oldest of seven children. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James in 1993, Jack in 2012 and a sister, Kathryn in 2011. He is survived by his sisters, Doris Neal of Okmulgee, OK and Juanita Bowles of Salado,TX and brother, Harold of Kingwood, TX. After he moved, to Mt. Airy, he enjoyed spending time with a neighbor Doris Hicok. In October 2012 he moved to Country Meadows in Frederick, MD.
Surviving are two children, Carol Eader and husband Buddy of Mt. Airy and Robert P. Higdon, Jr. and wife Deborah of Frederick, MD, granddaughters, Denise Troller and husband Thomas of Mt. Airy, Linda Stream and husband Brian of Hagerstown, Julie Carr and husband Jason of Bristow, VA and great grandchildren Alaina and Travis Troller of Mt. Airy, Lauryn and Ryan Carr of Bristow, Va. and Brody and Skyler Stream of Hagerstown, MD.
The family will receive family and friends from 3-5 PM on Friday December 26, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd, Mt. Airy, MD where funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday December 27. Interment will be at Parklawn Memorial Park at 12800 Veirs Mills Road, Rockville, MD following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gilchrist Hospice Care at 5537 Twin Knolls Road, Suite 434, Columbia, MD 21045.
