Richard Underhill Scott - 88, died August 20, 2012.
Dick was born January 24, 1924 in Highland Falls, NY. Dick Scott graduated from high school and enrolled at Colgate. He then transferred to Baylor and joined the Army, but his dream was always to be a naval pilot. He applied, received an appointment and in 1945 Scott commenced a successful football career with the United States Naval Academy. He was named to the All-American teams in 1945 and 1947. In 1948, he was runner-up MVP in the College All- Star game played in Chicago and five times in 1947 he was named Associated Press Lineman of the Week. Dick was President of his class and Brigade Commander, and he also lettered in lacrosse and basketball at Navy. Following his naval career as a pilot and Academy teacher, he worked for Lockheed, and the Department of Defense, then was appointed Director of Advanced Research Project Agency, at Camp Smith, Hawaii. After 34 years of varied service, Scott retired from government in 1981 and took a job teaching junior high school in Potomac, Maryland. He ceased his teaching job a few years later and he and his wife moved to Buckingham’s Choice in Adamstown, Maryland.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Liz Hazlett Scott (daughter of Captain Edward E. Hazlett Jr. ’15); sister, Shirley Neilson who resides in Germany; daughter, Polly; son, Peter; and three grandchildren, Nicole, Lauren and Tim. He was predeceased by his son, Timothy Scott ‘84.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for September 8, 2012, at 1:30 pm at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 10033 River Road, Potomac, MD 20854.
