Mr. Richard L. Poffenberger, 89, of Frederick, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Somerford Assisted Living. He was the loving husband of the late Ruth Bernice (Arnold) Poffenberger, who predeceased him in April of 2010. They were married for 56 years.
Born July 9, 1925 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Albert N. and Nellie R. (Longnecker) Poffenberger.
Mr. Poffenberger was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School and Hagerstown Business College. He was a WWII Veteran, having served with the United States Army. He received the Purple Heart medal. Following his military service, he worked for his father at Security Tavern in Hagerstown for many years. Following that, he had a career with Fredericktowne Bank, retiring in 1988. He loved spending time with his family and traveling to Branson, MO and Nags Head, NC. He was an avid reader and loved autobiographies, historical books and fiction. Additionally, he loved model trains and collecting coins.
He is survived by his son, Daryl Poffenberger and wife, Ruth; two grandsons, Michael and wife, Amy Jo, and Kevin and wife, Megan; a great-grandson, Benjamin; and two sisters, Hilda Linn and husband, Carl, and Shirley Gish.
Mr. Poffenberger was predeceased by a brother-in-law, John Gish.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2015 from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Myersville.
Arrangements are being handled by Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A. of Frederick.
