Richard Miller

Mr. Richard ‘Allen’ Miller, 71 of Thurmont passed away on Friday, September 3 rd at the Frederick Memorial Hospital after a courageous 11 year battle with ALS. He was the loving husband for 46 years to JoEllen McKissick Miller.

Born in the Catoctin Furnace area of Thurmont, MD on December 18, 1938 he was the son of the late Rheada (Martin) Miller Shuff and Richard O. Miller. Allen lost his father early in his life in the European Theater of World War II. A 1957 graduate of Thurmont High School, Allen received his Associate in Arts from Frederick Community College.

He worked for 32 years as a supervisor at Claire Frock Company, attended college, and then worked for 5 years at Mountain Gate Plaza before falling ill. A pillar in the Thurmont community, Allen was incremental in developing many youth sports, having part in starting the Catoctin High School Football program. Last year a game ball was presented to him from the State Championship winning team. He was an avid Maryland Terrapin and Cleveland Indians fan.

Allen was a member of Thurmont United Methodist Church and has served in many different offices of the church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Wendy Miller Cordell and husband CJ of Thurmont, and Jean Miller Rippeon and husband Kevin of Emmitsburg; his four grandchildren, with whom he loved spending his time with, Rebecca Cordell of Elkridge, and Adam Cordell of Thurmont, Dalton and Bailee Rippeon of Emmitsburg; his brother James C. Miller and wife Fran of Wilmington, DE; two nieces, Beth Wall and husband Gerard, and Michelle Figeroa and husband Mike; his step father John Shuff, and four great nephews and four great nieces.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 PM at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont MD.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 8 th at the Thurmont United Methodist Church with Rev. Garland Morgan and Rev. Matthew Poole officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Cemetery.
