Richard (Rich) Mellow of Sharpsburg, age 73, died peacefully Tuesday, March 31, 2015 in the home that he loved. Born January 21, 1942 in New York City to Anthony and Marie Mellow, Rich grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania with his brother Douglas. His life led him to Maryland where he happened upon Rachael Carpenti, who he quickly (and wisely) made his wife on August 31, 1968.
Rich worked hard as an Electrician for the IBEW Local 26, earning many awards throughout his long and distinguished career. The most cherished of which was the Craftsmanship Award, which he won while working on the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Rich was also instrumental in building and maintaining the International Monetary Fund, also in Washington, D.C. Rich was an avid gun collector, and loved to handle and shoot his many firearms. Rich was passionate about gun safety and knowledge, and would happily chat with anyone he could about guns and ammunition. He was also an accomplished woodworker and carpenter, and could build anything imaginable. His family, friends, and colleagues looked up to him as a man of dignity, wisdom, honesty, and humor. Rich had a wonderfully unique sense of humor, and his wit and personality made everyone love him.
In addition to his wife Rachael he is survived by their three children Debi, Joe, and Tiffany; his mother Marie; his brother Douglas and wife Bernadette, their sons Douglas and Anthony; grandchildren Kelan and Braeden; and numerous other relations. There will be no formal service as that’s not what he wanted; the family will instead host a big party to celebrate his life in June (date to be determined). All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please make a contribution to your local Fire and Rescue Company in his name.
