Richard Lofts

d. April 25, 2012

Richard S. Lofts died on April 25, 2012, after courageously battling the confines of Parkinson’s disease.  Born on May 19, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, he graduated from Drury College in Missouri and from Wayne State in Michigan.  Prior to college, he proudly served in the Pacific during World War II aboard the USS San Francisco.  He met his future bride, Mary Lou Mozley, while both were attending college in Missouri.  The Lofts moved to the Detroit area where Richard taught music at Roseville High School for thirty years.  His infectious and enduring love of music energized and inspired many students.  While in Michigan, he sang professionally at Christ Church in Detroit.
After retiring from teaching, he and Mary Lou moved to Tennessee and enjoyed golfing, boating, travel, and their many friendships.  Mr. Lofts played in the hand bell choir at his church and was a faithful member of the United Church of Christ. In 2003, he and Mary Lou moved to Frederick to be closer to family.
Mr. Lofts’ winning smile and cheerful spirit endeared him to all who met him.  He was quick to make a joke and just as quick to laugh at one.  He is survived by son Richard Jr. and wife Loreen of Myersville, and daughter Sarah Lofts Banner and husband Larry of Clinton Township, Michigan.  Also surviving are his six beloved grandchildren;  Michael Lofts (Dawn Berk) of Delaware, Tracy Lofts (Vicky Gouge) of Texas, Stephen Lofts and Gregory Lofts, both of New York, Blake Banner and Reed Banner, both of Michigan.  Richard is also remembered by his cherished great grandchild, Charlotte Berk-Lofts, and his former daughter-in-law, Barb Lofts.  He was preceded in death by his dear wife in 2008 and their daughter Pamela in 1980.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the amazing, caring staff at Meadows Court in Homewood who provided much love and excellent care to Richard during the year and a half he resided there.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Homewood at Crumland Farms, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, MD.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “Homewood Benevolent Fund” and mailed to Homewood Foundation, P.O. Box 250, Williamsport, MD 21795.
