Richard H. (Dick) Smith passed away on July 13, 2018, in Eldersburg, Maryland. As Dick liked to say, he was “born at an early age, close to his mother,” on November 21, 1927, to Harry and Ida Mae (LeCompte) Smith. He was happily married to Anna May Osborn for 59 years, until she passed away in 2009. He was fortunate to meet and later marry Joyce Klein. Proud father, blessed with five sons: Jim (California); Dave (Florida); Doug (Middletown); Ken (Hagerstown); Dan (Frederick); he was also blessed to have many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was known by many and loved by all.
Dick was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. He was educated at Baltimore Junior College and Western Maryland College, where he graduated in 1952 with a B.S. degree in history. Following graduation, Dick worked for Koonze Creamery prior to joining Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers, where he worked for the next 40 years.
He was active in Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy for many years. In 1985, he also joined the Church of the Open Door in Westminster. He was the leader of Cub Scout Troop 734 and Boy Scout Troop 460, writing the lyrics to the marching ballads for both troops. He was also a Little League coach, among many other civic activities.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8pm on Monday, July 23, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 8 E. Ridgeville Ave, Mt. Airy, Maryland. The family will also receive friends from 11-1pm at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. The celebration of his life’s journey, will begin at the funeral home at 1pm. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
