Richard Lee Haynes, 99, of Rohrersville, Maryland, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. He was the beloved husband of the late Marietta June (Clopper) Haynes for 67 1/2 years who passed on December 25, 2012.
Born on April 27, 1925, on Park Hall Road, Rohrersville, he was the son of the late David Harold and Elsie C (Haines) Haynes. He lived his entire 99 years, 10 months within a one-mile radius on Park Hall Road. He was a farmer most of his life raising chickens and then went into a partnership with his son to establish Haynes Dairy Farm. He also worked as a substitute rural carrier for the Boonsboro Post Office before becoming a full-time carrier and then clerk. He retired from the Post Office in 1987.
He was a lifelong member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Rohrersville and held many offices in addition to being the choir director for 58 years. He was a Charter Member of the Rohrersville Ruritan Club which was formed in the 1950s.
He was a member of the first Boonsboro High School Marching Band and participated in school plays and operettas. He graduated in 1943. He also sang with the Cumberland Valley Choristers.
He became a member of the Rohrersville Cornet Band on December 6, 1940, playing the cornet. He was Director for 44 years, retiring in 2004. He continued to play with the Band for 82 years until May 2022 - the longest of any member in the history of the Band.
After retiring as Director, he focused his time on assembling the history of the Band into a book titled, "And the Band Plays On… A History of the Rohrersville Cornet Band of Washington County, The First 170 Years." He continued writing “The Way It Was” telling the story of Rohrersville community in days gone by. Then came the story of the nearby historic “Shifler Marble Quarry and Marble Business in the Rohrersville Area,” and a volume updating the history of the Band including the celebration of 175 years of service and the 100-year-old Band Hall. He also wrote “A History of Bethel Church in Rohrersville - 198 years - A Musical History of Bethel - 60 Years” in December 2019
