Richard William Hauer, Jr. passed away June 27, 2018 in his home in Frederick, Md, following an eight year battle with Stage 4 Lung Cancer.
Richard was born February 12, 1940 in Baltimore to Richard W. Hauer, Sr. and Regina W. Hauer nee Kmiec. He graduated from Loyola High School and Loyola College, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army on June 4, 1961. He obtained his master's degree from Florida Institute of Technology. Richard and his wife, Carolyn Patricia Haeffner, were married on October 27, 1962 at the Shrine of the Little Flower Church, Baltimore. Richard served in the United States Army for 30 years with a primary specialty of Health Services Materiel Officer. He served in Vietnam, was Commander of the 45th Medical Battalion in Hanau, Germany, and Post Commander of Fort Detrick in Frederick from Aug 1986 to Aug 1989. He retired as a full Colonel with 30 years of service on June 4, 1991. Education being very important to him, he then worked as the Business Manager at St. Johns at Prospect Hall and later Operations Manager at Frederick Towne Mall. He was a member of American Legion Francis Scott Key Post 11.
Richard was always close to his family. Growing up he enjoyed summers with his grandparents and cousins near Tolchester Beach. He was pleased to be part of four generations of Hauers. In spite of living overseas and in other states, he always made time for family gatherings and reunions. He had great faith in God, loyalty to and love for his family, and he provided so much for all of us. His life was spent working hard to ensure the success of his family. He took pride in all that he endeavored, taking care to do an exemplary job whether earning the Yard of the Month award in San Antonio, driving the boat along the trot line so every crab could be scooped up, working with wood, cooking his Mom’s crab soup recipe for the family, or growing flowers around his “St. Frank” statue. He always had a project going. From his early days as an altar boy, he was a lifelong devoted Catholic with a special love for the Jesuits. He loved fishing and crabbing and just looking out the back door at his boat. He was full of pride for his wife, children, and grandchildren, and loved spending time with his grandkids, from pulling the older ones on waterskis to playing with cars with the younger ones.
Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Patricia Hauer, his four children, Catherine, her husband Jeff Mayer; Richard W. III, his wife Norma; David, his wife Sally; Steve, his wife Anne Marie, seven grandchildren; Chrissy Mayer, Tommy Mayer, Grace Hauer, Nick Hauer, Garren Hauer, Callie Hauer, and Bronson Hauer; an uncle Fred Kmiec, and many close Kmiec and Eisner cousins. Appreciation is felt for Dr. Sadaf Taimur and her staff. Viewing will be at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick on Thursday July 5th from 2-4, and 6-8. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Frederick on Friday July 6th at 11:30 am.
