Mr. Richard Maurice Floyd of Jefferson, Maryland entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 after a brief and courageous battle with Mesothelioma. He was the husband of Virginia L. Painter Floyd for 46 years. Born on December 4, 1940 in Cumberland, Maryland, he was the son of the late Maurice Jennings and Edna Leona Floyd .
Richard was a 1959 graduate of Frederick High School and was currently serving as President of the Frederick High School Alumni Association.
His professional career includes 27 years with IBM beginning as a Journeyman HVAC Technician and advancing to Manager of Facilities Systems Engineering. He had a keen interest in Environment, Safety and Health and changed career paths and became a Staff Engineer. When Lockheed Martin took ownership of his division he became the Environmental, Safety and Health Program Specialist. After his retirement he enjoyed working part time for the YMCA in Frederick.
Richard served his country for 4 years in the United States Air Force in the Strategic Air Command and was stationed at Homestead Airforce Base in Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He loved his community and was very active in it. He was a member of the Jefferson United Church of Christ, singing in the choir and serving on the consistory as an Elder. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 11 and the Elks Club, BPOE 684. He coached Youth T ball and Little League baseball for 11 years and youth league basketball in Brunswick for 4 years.
Richard was very civic minded and driven to make his community a better place for all. He spent 40 years actively working toward the sustainability of Frederick County as an advocate for responsible growth and environmental stewardship. He served on the Frederick County Planning Commission for 12 years. He also served on the Frederick County Charter Writing Committee 1990 - 1991 and the Zoning Rewrite Committee 1996. He was a founding member of several advocacy groups, Frederick County Civic Federation, Citizens for Quality of Life and Friends of Frederick County. He was an active member of the Maryland Citizens Planners Association and served as president for two years and was a past Regional Vice President of the Safety Council of Maryland, Inc., a chapter of the National Safety Council. Richard also ran for the office of Frederick County Commissioner in 2002 and again in 2006.
In addition to his wife he is survived by, sons Scott Floyd and wife Shannon of Martinsburg, WV and Aaron Floyd and wife Michelle of Frederick; grandchildren, Rebekah Floyd, Joshua Floyd, Jacob Floyd, Wesley VanFleet and Tyler Browne; sister, Linda English and husband Scott of Smithsburg; nephews, Steve Stevens and Matt Stevens; nieces, Jennifer Stevens Long and husband Dan, Amanda Stevens and Maurlea Long.
Richard would want to be remembered just as a man who loved God, his family, cherished his grandchildren, loved his country and especially his community and the people in it.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 12 at 10 AM.
