Richard Winthrop Burd Sr.

Richard Winthrop “Dick” Burd, Sr., 77, of Sabillasville, MD, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023 at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, MD surrounded by his loving family.

Born on February 10, 1946 in Canandaigua, NY, he was the son of the late Ruth (Shaw) Burd Roat.

He attended Bloomfield Central School where he met his high school sweetheart and wife, Sharon.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. His 20-year military career included 15 years at Camp David working for four different U.S. presidents.

Dick, self-appointed Mayor of Sabillasville, enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid Yankees fan, baseball coach, and teammate on the Camp David basketball, softball, and volleyball teams. He loved and was very knowledgeable about history, animals, and nature. He enjoyed being outdoors. He looked forward to going to Ocean City for the car shows every year.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Sharon (Fraser) Burd. Also surviving are five children: Mishele Estes (husband Perry) of Thurmont, MD; Pamela Beard of Sabillasville, MD; Richard Burd, Jr. (wife Brandie) of Waynesboro, PA; Shannon Brown (husband Melvin) of Emmitsburg, MD; Ryan Burd (wife Brooke) of Sabillasville, MD and one sister Carol Harvey (husband Edward) of Lima, NY.  In addition, he took great pride in his many grandchildren:  Allison, Katelyn, Megan, Scott, Jr., Ethan, Camelia, Morgan, Nicole, Erin, Jason, Levi, Benjamin, Rylee, Evan and many great-grandchildren. 

Other than his mother Ruth, he was preceded in death by a grandson Jacob, and a great-granddaughter Brooklyn.

The family will receive friends from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont, MD.

A celebration of life service with military honors will take place at 11:00am on Friday, June 30, 2023 at St. John’s Church, 16923 Sabillasville Road in Sabillasville, MD.
