The Rev. Robert (Bob) Lee Kanagy, 80, of Mt. Airy died Friday, January 15, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness complicated by spinal cord injury and Parkinson's disease. He was the loving husband of Karen Leigh Norwood Kanagy. They were married on May 22, 1976.
Born on November 5, 1935 at the Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Joseph Raymond and Mary Ethelwyn (Tompkins) Kanagy.
Bob attended the original Montgomery Blair High School (1953), University of Maryland College Park (1957), and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1960). He was a minister and pastor of numerous Baptist churches throughout the country. Bob completed his career as a Deputy Chief Probation Officer with the Commonwealth of Virginia. In his retirement, Bob drove a school bus in Carroll and Frederick counties.
He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, retiring as Division Captain. He was a former member of the Mt. Airy Board of Appeals and currently was a member of Frederick Presbyterian Church.
He loved boating, skiing, reading, classical music, church hymns, Christmas music, traveling and riding trains.
Bob is survived by his wife, Karen, and their son, Jonathan; his children, David Lee Kanagy and wife, Patrice; Beth Anne Allen and husband, Brett; and Leigh Anne Bates and husband, David; grandchildren, Benjamin Joseph and Andrew Mark Kanagy; Brian Allen, Emily Hauser (Kyle), and Laura Allen; and Christian and Erin Bates; a brother, Michael Tompkins Kanagy; and many other relatives, caregivers and loving friends and neighbors. He will be remembered by his former wife, Elizabeth Angeline Mayfield.
He was predeceased by his parents and a grandchild, Austin Lee Bates.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Frederick Presbyterian Church, 115 W. Second Street, Frederick, with the Rev. Dr. Eric T. Myers officiating. There will be a reception at church immediately following services.
