Rev. Paul Redmond

July 28, 1927 — October 19, 2014

Reverend Paul V. Redmond
Long time Mount Professor and Administrator Succumbs

Rev. Paul V. Redmond passed peacefully with friends by his side on Sunday, October 19, 2014, at the age of 87.  He was a resident at Saint Catherine’s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, MD at the time of his death.

Paul was born on July 28, 1927, to the late Jerome V. and Nona (Sullivan) Redmond in Albany, New York.

Paul graduated high school from Vincentian Institute in Albany, NY and then attended Saint Andrew’s Preparatory Seminary in Rochester, NY.  He received a Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, all from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.

Paul was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Diocese of Albany, NY on June 12, 1954.  He was then assigned as Assistant Pastor at Saint John’s Church, Rensselaer, NY, serving there for fourteen months.

In 1955, Father Paul was invited to join the faculty of Mount St. Mary’s College (now University) as Dean of Freshman and professor of philosophy.  He remained an active professor and administrator at the Mount until 1997, holding various positions including department chairs of theology and philosophy, dean of freshmen and vice president.  Father Paul was the last surviving member of the Council of Priests, the former governing body of Mount St. Mary’s University.

In addition to his teaching, Father Paul assisted with weekend services for seven years in the 1960s and 70s at Saint Mark’s Church in Catonsville, MD.  Upon his retirement from the Mount, he continued his service to the Church at Saint Anthony’s Shrine, in Emmitsburg, MD, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in Thurmont, MD until 2011.

In fellowship with seminarians, students, faculty and friends, he hosted countless luncheons, guest visits, and opera nights through the years.  Many of his students were fond of Father Paul and requested that he preside at their weddings and baptize their children.  During times of mourning, he would reach out to any member of the extended Mount family with comfort and assurance of the Lord’s love.   He was deeply grateful for the gift of serving as a priest of Jesus Christ.  He is well remembered by the Mount community for his two frequently used phases… “Call me Paul” and “Hello Friend.”

Father Paul was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22, at Stauffer Funeral Home 104 East Main Street in Thurmont, Maryland.  A scriptural wake service and eulogies will be offered at The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s University at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, with the Holy Rosary beginning at 8 p.m.  A Funeral Mass will be held at The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 24.  Rev. Thomas Connery of the Diocese of Albany and longtime friend of Paul’s will be the main celebrant, with additional concelebrants from across the country.

Interment will be in “Priests’ Row” at Saint Anthony’s Cemetery, Emmitsburg, Maryland.  Online condolences may be made at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nona S. and Jerome V. Redmond Memorial Scholarship Fund at Mount St. Mary’s University 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road Emmitsburg, MD  21727.
