Revere Williams Gurley, 84, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Friday, May 19, 2017, in Myersville, Maryland.
Born August 7, 1932, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Revere Babcock Gurley and Margaret Carrington Gurley.
Revere (Ree) spent his childhood in Garrett Park, Maryland. When he was a teen, his family moved to Arlington, Virginia. He graduated from Western High School in Washington, D.C., and later earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. While serving in the Navy, he met and married Dianne Joan Hartranft. They were married on October 22, 1955 in her hometown of Fulton, New York. They remained married for over 50 years and lived in Pensacola, Florida and Norfolk, Virginia before settling in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1959 to raise their family.
Ree began his military career soon after high school by joining the United States Navy and becoming a Naval Aviator. After seven and a half years as an active-duty officer in the Navy, he served seven years in the Naval Reserve. He left the Navy as a lieutenant commander and then served seven years in the Air Force Reserve, flying with the Maryland Air National Guard. After 21 years of service to his country, he retired as a major in the United States Air Force. Upon retiring from the military, he completed his career working for the Federal Aviation Administration.
In his spare time, he enjoyed music, working on his cars and spending time with loved ones. He was beloved by his grandchildren, known to them as “Pop-Pop”.
Ree will be missed by many. He is survived by his five children; Dale Gurley, Don Gurley (Rosanna), Sue Tessitore (Jim), Michele Wilson (Mark) and Debbie Mahoney (Jim), seventeen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and his companion, Lois White. He was predeceased by his wife, Dianne Hartranft Gurley, and his four older siblings; John Gurley, Joseph Gurley, Elaine King and Charlotte Mattern.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A. 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, Maryland. A brief memorial service will take place at 8:00 p.m. Full military honors will be given at Arlington National Cemetery, date and time to be determined.
