Raymond Thomas Powell of Thurmont, died on April 7, 2010 at Frederick Memorial Hospital from kidney disease. Born January 30, 1924 he was the son of the late Luther Kuhlman and Leona (Stull) Powell.
Mr. Powell was an active, lifetime member of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church and served as their treasurer for 33 years.
He worked for the former M.J. Grove Lime Company for 43 years, retiring in 1983. He spent the next 23 years repairing lawn mowers. Raymond served in the 30th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operation during WW II. He played softball with Rice's Grocery Team and the Bright Spot Team. He was also an avid hunter. He and his wife, Ruth, spent many happy hours square dancing with Gateway Swingers, Les Chewing, and Fredericktown Promenaders.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Ruth Geasey, his daughter Laura, and son in law Benjamin Like; his son Dennis and daughter in law Marlene; his grandchildren, Christopher Like and wife Ashley, Abra, Sophia, Elliot Like, Kristina, Rachel and Spencer Powell. Also surviving is his sister in law, Thelma Grushon Powell, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Harold and Mehrl.
Visitation: The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
Services:
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 11th at 2:00 PM at the Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9664 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. His former pastor. Rev Beverly Lange-Donella and her husband Rev. Joseph Donella will be officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Lewistown immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church or the charity of one's choice.
