Raymond Staininger

January 27, 1916 — February 1, 2013

Mr. Ray Staininger of Frederick, MD, and formerly of South Dakota and Arizona, passed away on Friday February 1, 2013, at St. Catherine’s Nursing home in Emmitsburg. He was 97 years old.

Born in Drumwright, OK on January 27, 1916, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Louise Staininger of Chamberlain, SD. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Helen L. Staininger of Frederick, MD, and his daughters Melina Miller and Lynn Staininger, both of Frederick MD. Also surviving him are his grandsons Todd Miller and Tyler Miller, granddaughter-in-law Kathleen Miller and great grandchildren Samuel, Alex, Dylan and Ginger Miller, and Jesse Staininger.

An early love of aviation led him to enlist in the Army Air Corps in 1937 and subsequently to flight school. There was nothing in life that he was prouder of than earning his wings and taking command of his first bomber. A gifted pilot, he flew multiple missions over the South Pacific, and was the only pilot in his squadron to come home alive.

He was in every way a true member of the ‘Greatest Generation’. Strong, capable, skilled, hardworking and stoic, he progressed through his life from Boy Scouts, to the CCC’s, to Radio Tech for B-26’s and B-17’s, to a B-24 bomber 1st pilot, to a successful career in the Federal Aviation Agency. He loved the family ranch in South Dakota and ran it for many years; he was a DIY master, animal lover, student of history and a musician.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick. Officiating will be Rev. David Albertson. Internment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 1120 G Street, NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20005; or to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
