Ralph Edward Reed (82) was born in Edelstein, Illinois, on September 6, 1931. He died at Frederick Memorial Hospital on February 12, 2014, of heart failure. He was the son of Alvin Dewey Reed and Mamie Kear Reed.
He was the husband of Alberta Stymiest Reed for nearly 57 years. He was the father of Robin Reed Correia (Bob) and the grandfather of Alexandra Correia of Woodsboro, Maryland. He leaves to morn his passing his brothers-in-law, James F. Stymiest and Stephen G. Stymiest (Sonja) of Frederick, Maryland; his sisters-in-law, Grace Stymiest Johnson (Chester) of Annapolis, Maryland, and Doris Abbott of Tucson, Arizona. Also 4 nieces: Nicole Bookout (John), Jennifer Stymiest, Julia Pumroy (Matthew); Marilyn Kirkley (William), one nephew: Eric Abbott (Evelyn), 2 great nephews: Kevin Abbott-Spitzer and Jason Kirkley (Ann Marie). Also, three great nieces: Madison and McKenna Bookout, and Abigail Pumroy: one great-great niece: Olivia Kirkley and two great-great nephews: Matthew and Joshua Marcotte. Also three cousins: John E. Reed, Arthur Reed (Barbara), and Donita Curry. Mr. Reed was predeceased by his brother, John Abbott, two sisters, Winifred and Marjorie Reed, and a great-niece Jennifer Marcotte.
Also near and dear to his heart are: Susan Breithaupt, Eugene and Erline Burgess and family, Dr. Frank and Ann Damazo, Jeff and Gwen Jeffers and family, Teresa and Pete Kelchner and family, and Louis and Jan Vasquez.
Mr. Reed served as a medical corpsman in the U. S. Navy before earning an under-graduate degree in Education from Columbia Union College and a Master’s Degree from Western Maryland College. Twenty three of his 40 years of teaching took place in the Frederick County Public School System, with service at the Wolfsville, Yellow Springs, New Midway, and Middletown Elementary Schools.
He was actively involved in the Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church serving as an Elder, and directing many of the children’s ministries programs throughout the years. During the summer months he served as the Nature Director at the Mt. Aetna Youth Camp, where was awarded the title of Nature Director Emeritus. He was dearly loved by his family, a host of friends, the children he worked with and many former students.
A memorial service will be held on March 15, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. at the Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church, 6437 Jefferson Pike, Frederick, Maryland. Mr. Reed will be interred at Greenhill Cemetery in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, in a private graveside service.
