Mr. Ralph M. Gates, 75, of Thurmont, MD passed away Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born January 28, 1937 in Hutchinson, KS he was the son of the late Edgar and Molly (Bowers) Gates.

Mr. Gates was a 1955 graduate of Bethesda Chevy Chase. He attended the University of Maryland and American University studying Horticulture.

Mr. Gates served in the Army reserve in the early 60's. He went on the work at Stock Nursery for over 50 yrs., retiring June 2011. Mr Gates enjoyed working outdoors with trees and flowers.

Mr. Gates was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Creagerstown. Over the years he was involved with the Creagerstown Ruritan, serving as Treasurer,
coached CYA soccer and helped with the Catoctin High School Band Boosters, while his children were involved

Mr. Gates enjoyed his Antique business and liked the challenge of searching for many new items. His love of antiques went along with his love of history especially the Civil War.

Surviving are his wife of 47 yrs, Nancy (Danneberg) Gates; his children, Dana Cessna and husband Wayne, Clearville, PA; Michael T. Gates and wife Cheryl of Spring Valley, CA; grandchildren, Tyler and Molly Cessna and Jack and Katherine Gates; his brother Edgar Rodney Gates and wife Darlene, Bridgeton, NJ;sister-in-laws, Phillis Elliott and husband Ralph, Richmond, VA., Chris Motz, Yorktown, VA and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont Thursday Nov. 8, 2012 from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm where a funeral service will be held Friday November 9 at 11am Rev. Gordon Narvesen will officiate.

Interment will follow at Benevola Cemetery.
