R. Allen McFarland

R. Allen McFarland, 74, of Mount Airy, Maryland passed from this life on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Charter Senior Living in Annapolis, MD.

Born on July 18, 1947 in Richmond, VA he was the son of Frank Kenneth McFarland and Frances Ann (nee Karovic) McFarland.

Allen served overseas in the United States Army prior to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University.  He continued to serve his country building complex military and civilian systems for IBM and Lockheed Martin in Rockville, MD until his retirement in 2017.  In retirement he enjoyed dancing and traveled the world, visiting six of the seven continents.

He frequently socialized at the Mount Airy American Legion Post #191, participated in a variety of square and ballroom dance events, and was known for his meticulous nature and fine woodworking skills. His family will remember the many Independence Day celebrations at his home in Mt. Airy and the exciting pyrotechnics of which he was so fond.

He was preceded by his first wife, Karen Marie McFarland (nee King) and second wife Gaynelle Louise Troster.

He is survived by his sons, Adam (Molly) McFarland, of Glen Burnie, MD and Kevin (Erica) McFarland of Durham, NC; two grandchildren, Toby and Lillian McFarland; three sisters Roberta Arlene Heidrich of Winter Park, FL, Roselyn Adele Sias of Lavalette, WV, and Rebecca Andrea O’Connor of Lakeland, FL.

A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Allen's life will take place on Sunday, March 6 at 11:00 am. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, Maryland 21771.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
