Rachel Shafer

Rachel (Palmer) Shafer, 89, of Middletown, Maryland, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, Maryland.
Born on July 29, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Mary (Remsburg) Palmer. Mrs. Shafer was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Albert V. Shafer, on September 4, 2009.
Mrs. Shafer was a 1941 graduate of Boonsboro High School. She held a variety of jobs outside the home. The first being with the American Store in Boonsboro, Maryland and most recent from Weis Markets at Amber Meadows in Frederick until her retirement.
Rachel was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, Maryland.
Mrs. Shafer is survived by a daughter, Nancy L. and her husband, Donald Detrow of Hagerstown, Maryland; a son, Albert L. Shafer of Middletown; two sisters, Lorraine and her husband, Bernard Funk of Myersville and Frances Blickenstaff of Boonsboro, Maryland; two brothers, Malcolm Palmer, Jr. and his wife Sara Jane of Hagerstown and Kenneth Palmer of Columbia, Maryland. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Dawn and her husband Mikel Thomas and Katie Peck; a grandson, Keith Detrow and his wife Mendy. In addition, she is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Brandi and Mikey Thomas, Bryan and Matthew Detrow and Janell and Devin Peck.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Avice Smith and Sarah Long; and one brother, Amos Palmer.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. The Rev. Cris Frigm will officiate. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Middletown.
Family will receive friends from 6 - 8 on Monday, November 14, 2011 at the funeral home.
