Rachel W. Hahn-Warfield, 100, of Myersville, Maryland, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 peacefully at her daughter's home surrounded by her family.
Born on May 24, 1922, in Frederick, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late William L. Waters and Altie M. (Younkins) Waters.
She graduated from Middletown High School and remembered her time their fondly.
Her father was a Dairy Farmer in Myersville and President of the Myersville Bank from 1955-1972. Her mother was a homemaker.
As a child Rachel had many daily chores on the farm including gathering the eggs and feeding the calves, the often told story that she and Miriam walked 2 miles up the hill to the Myersville Elementary School when it was freezing, the wind was blowing and the snow was falling. She had many treasured memories growing up on her parents farm.
In 1945, Rachel married W. Staley Hahn, a successful Dairy Farmer who operated Monocacy-Ayr Farm, with one of the largest Ayrshine Cow herds in the country at the time. They were blessed with two daughters, Brenda Lynn and Myra Jean. Staley's untimely death in 1956 forced Rachel to seek employment outside of the home. She held positions with Fairchild Hiller, The MD-West Virginia Bull Stud, long-time hostess at Peter Pan Inn and working part-time after retiring at Bon-Ton Department Store. No matter what job she held she was always recognized for her work ethic.
Many years after Staley's death she met and married William Warfield and lived in Mt. Airy. He was employed by Southern States, Mt. Airy American Legion Post #191 and Tractor Supply. He died in 1999.
One of her many beloved activities was baking. She entered her signature Cherry Pie at The Great Frederick Fair and won the Grand Champion prize. Her family, friends, farm employees would vie for the last slice.
Rachel loved to read and she was always intellectually curious. While retired she loved going to the Mt. Airy Senior Center and later having lunch at McDonald's with her many friends. The group called themselves the Mt. Airy Lunch Bunch. They would update each other on family matters, current events and having plain old fun.
Her 100th birthday was the ultimate celebration. She received over 225 birthday cards from family, friends and friends of friends. She would spend hours reading and re-reading every card. They gave her great happiness. She also received a Proclamation from the Howard County Executive, honoring her 100th birthday. She lived life to the fullest, treasuring everyday. Her life was one of love, sacrifice and tenaciousness. She was a valued and productive member of her community. She always had a smile and a good word for everyone she met. Above all she was a nurturing mother.
She is survived by daughters, Myra Jean Hahn and Brenda Lynn Franz and her husband, William; sister-in-law, Miriam Reed and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
Rachel was preceded in death by her siblings, Miriam Kopp, Jean Sandifer and Calvin Waters.
A celebration of Rachel's life will take place at 11:30 am on Monday, September 19, 2022, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 8 East Ridgeville in Mt. Airy, MD 21771. Father Derek Miller will officiate. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department,702 N. Main Street, Mount Airy, MD 21771.
