Phyllis A. Wisherd, 93, of Hagerstown, passed from this life on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 at Fahrney - Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro.

Born on December 24, 1931, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John Merlin Wisherd and Pauline (Snyder) Wisherd.

She was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School in 1949 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Towson State Teachers College (now Towson University) in 1953 then a Master's of Education from Oswego State University.

Ms. Wisherd taught grades 2 and 3 for 43 years at Salem Avenue Elementary School. After retirement, she volunteered at Williamsport Elementary School for 7 years. She enjoyed volunteering when needed - mostly with the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. She worked in the Church School program as a teacher, co-ordinator of the Elementary Dept. and for many years as the Director of the Church School Curriculum and Resources. She was a member of the Christian Education Ministry Team, the Worship Ministry Team and The Property and Finance Ministry Team. She was a member of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, the bowling leagues "Precious Stone and Hits and Misses", WCREPA (Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association), serving as the reservation specialist for the luncheons for many years, the MRSPA (Maryland Retired State Personnel Association), the NRTA (National Retired Teachers Association), and the AARP.

Ms. Wisherd enjoyed watching sports on TV, participating in bowling serving as statistician and sometime treasurer. She enjoyed traveling, photography, gardening, painting the interior and exterior of houses, attending summer playhouse theaters, music presentations and most of all visiting and "eating out" with friends.

She is survived by her cousins, Leroy Burtner and wife, Sandra, of Hagerstown, Christopher Burtner and wife, Kerri, Abigail Burtner and Elijah Burtner, all of Somerset, PA, Hope Fuss and husband, David, Delany, Holden and Haley Fuss, all of Hagerstown. 

Ms. Wisherd was preceded in death by her cousin, David Stewart. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro with Rev. Eddie Edmonds officiating. She will be laid to rest, with her parents, at Mt. Zion Cemetery at San Mar in Boonsboro. The visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home. 

Phyllis will be missed greatly by all who were fortunate enough to know her. But, will find comfort in knowing that their lives were richer by having her as part of it.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Washington County or to the Hagerstown Church of Brethren, 15 South Mulberry Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
