Phyllis Malie Sites Hill, 84, formerly of 2941 San Mar, MD, died Friday, January 18, 2008 at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro.
Born November 30, 1923 in Indian Springs, MD, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Mamie C. Funkhouser Sites.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph P. Hill, June 6, 1961.
Phyllis was a graduate of Clear Spring High School. She received her BS Degree from Shepherd College and her Masters Degree from Shippensburg University. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; Clear Spring Historical Society; and she volunteered at the Miller House in Hagerstown.
In 1963 Phyllis became Librarian at Boonsboro High School. After four years she moved to the Board of Education where she organized the Instructional Resource Library and was later named Coordinator of Library Media Services and Instructional Resources. After 27 years, she retired in 1990. She then joined the Washington County Retired Teachers Association and served as chairman of the Community Service Committee.
Since her high school days in Clear Spring, Phyllis loved writing. In 1949 she received the Dr. Christian Award for her play "The Rainbow Trail." She coauthored "Thirteen to One", Mother's Favorite Quotes", "Who Will Sing My Song?", "Keller's Journey West" and "Memorabilia", a compilation of anonymous poems, are among her published works.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought joy to Phyllis in her retirement. Among the many activities that Phyllis enjoyed were flower gardening, reading, writing and needlework. She taught an adult Sunday School Class at Mt. Lena United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She was a member of Friends of Washington County Library and had volunteered in the Washington County Historical Society Library.
Phyllis is survived by daughter, Christine A. Stoops and husband, Brian, of Keedysville, MD; sons, Ronald A. Hill and wife, Jean, of Bel Air, MD, Marshall C. Hill and wife, Cynthia, of Hagerstown and Samuel A. Hill of Boonsboro; sisters, Constance E. Wessells and E. Denise Foreman both of Chambersburg, PA and Alita Lichtenwalter of Dallas, TX; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George A. Sites and a sister, Carmen Cormany.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, January 21 at St. Pauls Church in Clear Spring with Rev. Ronald R. Kurtz officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro which will open at noon for the convenience of friends.
