Peter Leonard Smith, age 89, of Buckingham’s Choice in Adamstown, MD, formerly of Chevy Chase, MD died peacefully on October 17 in hospice care. He is survived by his wife, Janet Smith, his children Sarah Kiefhaber and Andrew Smith, his sister, Joan Hall and his four grandchildren, Ian, Matthew and Julia Kiefhaber and Avery Smith and many other family members.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Elizabeth and P.L. Smith and spent his childhood years in Kenilworth, IL and later Washington, D.C. He attended Yale University graduating in 1955 with a degree in history. He finished his Masters Degree in accounting in 1988. He served 11 years in the U.S. Naval Security Group from 1956 to 1967 with tours of duty in Turkey, Taiwan and Japan. He taught English in Italy before his 30-year career with the Securities and Exchange Commission and later the NASDAQ just before his full retirement.
He was a loving brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather as well as being loyal and dedicated to many lifelong friends. He loved nothing more than having a conversation with people from all walks of life. He was always quick to laugh, enjoyed a good joke, and loved animals.
