On Saturday December 29, 2018, Paul William "Bill" Medairy, loving
husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away at age 80.
Bill was born on February 22, 1938 in Washington, DC. He was raised in Damascus,
Maryland and graduated from Damascus High School in 1956. He was a high school
athlete where he was a member of the basketball and track and field teams.
Bill began his career working with his father at the Montgomery County School Board and
transitioned to the Bethesda Fire Department in 1963. He was a distinguished
member of the Bethesda Fire Department where he spent more than 20 years until
his retirement in 1984. Upon retirement, Bill continued to work a second career for over 20
years as a school bus driver for the Carroll County School System and ultimately, a
third career at Challedon Golf Course until his retirement in November 2018.
The most important aspect of Bill's life was his family. He was always present and
played an instrumental role in shaping the lives and character of his son and three
grandchildren and was a fixture in all aspects of their lives. Bill loved watching sports
and especially enjoyed being on the sidelines to watch his grandkids play soccer,
basketball and volleyball. Family and friends knew him as a man with a servant's heart
who was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He had a passion for golf and
enjoyed spending time with his buddies on the golf course. Bill loved being outdoors
and mowed a lot of grass in his lifetime. He enjoyed hanging out with the guys
weekday mornings at the Mt. Airy McDonald's where they would spend hours drinking
coffee and solving the world's problems. Bill was a friendly and well-liked man, a man
of great character, sometimes ornery, and throughout his life demonstrated an
unwavering commitment to his family.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Paul and step-mother, Doris. He is survived
by his wonderful wife of 52-years, Pam, his son Brad and daughter-in-law Suzanne of
Oakton, VA, grandchildren Ella, Graham and Hayes, sisters Jackie Hamersley and
Bonnie Russell, a cousin, several nephews, and a niece.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 on Thursday, January
