Mr. Paul B. Rhoads, Jr., 89 of Frederick, MD passed away Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Rhoads.
Born April 17, 1920 in Frederick, MD he was the son of the late Paul B. Rhoads, Sr. and Louise Schly Rhoads.
Paul graduated from St. John's High School in 1936 and he graduated Cum Laud from Mount St. Mary's College in 1940 with a BS degree in Science. He was an active alumni of the college.
In 1941 he started his career at the National Cancer Institute which was later interrupted as he served in the United States Army as a Special Agent in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Germany. He then continued his 32 year career at Fort Detrick where he retired as a Microbiologist. After his retirement he served his community as Clerk of the County Boards of Elections for 11 years.
He was a Volunteer Fireman for over 60 years. In 2000 a new fire truck was dedicated in his name and in 1998 he was inducted to the Hall of fame for both the County and the State.
Paul served as an usher for 35 years in the St. John the Evangelist Parish and St. Katherine Drexel Parish. In 2002 he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by St. John Regional Catholic School and in 2006 Mount St. Mary's University awarded him the President's medal for unwavering service, leadership, dedication and friendship.
He was the oldest member of Frederick County Fish and Game Protective Association (Camp Kanawa) and he served as Past President.
He was also a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the AMVETS.
Paul is survived by his step daughter, Meg Garner McHenry, a grandson, Skye Hissey Valois, a step son, Robert W. Garner and wife Beth, his sister, Louise Loy, great grandchildren, Josephine and Clara Valois and his nieces and nephews, Gale, Nora, Ann and Philip Loy.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Rhoads.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Thursday, January 21st from 7-9PM.
Services:
A Memorial Mass Celebrating Pauls's life will be held on Friday, January 22nd at 10:00AM at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 116 East 2nd St., Frederick, MD 21701 with Rev. Msgr. Richard Murphy officiating.
The inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 2nd at 2:00 PM.
In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Relief Fund, 228 West Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201-3413.
