Paul Joseph Richards, 83, of Mt. Airy passed from this life on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at his residence. He was the husband of Caroline Conaway Richards, his wife of 63 years.
Born on October 21, 1934, in Clarksburg, MD, he was the son of the late Earl Burton and Mildred Hawkins Richards. He was a graduate of the old Clarksburg School and of the American Institute of Banking in Baltimore. "Joe" started his banking career with The First National Bank of Mt. Airy and retired as a Vice President of Mercantile Bank in Westminster. He served in the Maryland National Guard.
He had a deep and abiding faith in God that sustained him throughout his life. Joe was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church serving in many capacities including treasurer of the United Methodist Men and Sunday School, the church Board of Trustees. Through his work with Stephen Ministry, Joe provided loving care to those in need. He was also an assistant Scout Master with Troop 460, a member of the Mt. Airy Kiwanis Club and worked many years at the Mt. Airy Fireman's Carnival.
Joe enjoyed spending time with his family traveling, skiing, working in his yard, decorating for Christmas, biking and walking and other outdoor activities.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Mark Richards and wife Debbie of Mt. Airy, Beth Richards of Frederick and Fran Rosenzweig of Westminster; and his grandson, Tim Richards of Santa Cruz, CA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Tuesday, March 13, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville, Mt. Airy.
A celebration of Joe's life will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 14, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mt Airy, MD 21771, with Rev. Steve Larsen officiating. Interment will follow Pine Grove Cemetery in Mt Airy.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the above named church, Carroll Hospice, Inc., 292 Stoner Ave, Westminster, MD 21157.
