Paul Hamilton Raines, Sr., age 77, died August 31 at home surrounded by family.
He was born July 10, 1934, in Mt. Airy, MD to the late Cephas A. and Ethel S. Raines. He was happily married for 49 years to Patricia A. Wrightson Raines. Surviving in addition to his wife are his seven children: Paul H. Raines, Jr., of McConnellsburg, PA, Debra Reel and husband Dennis of Berkeley Springs, WV, Douglas Raines of Mt. Airy, Jeffrey Raines and wife Missy of Gaithersburg, Donna Hott and husband King of Bel Air, Scott Raines and wife Ellen of Darnestown, and Dawn Greco and husband Scott of Earlysville, VA. He will be missed by his 12 grandchildren Jessica, Amy, Paul C. and wife Jessica, Paul III., Douglas II., Alexander and Morgan Raines, Brooke and Andrew Gilley, Eva and Nate Greco, and Jessica Tyler; 7 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. He is also survived by two sisters, Alma Geneva Clay and husband Albert of New Market and Cynthia F. Jackson and husband Clyde of Frederick. He will be truly missed by everyone.
He is pre-deceased by three brothers, Willard, Cephas T., and Franklin Raines and four sisters, Frances Cartright, Ellen Wilt, Myrtle Peraro and Edith Gardner.
Paul graduated from Frederick High School in 1952. He served 6 years in the National Guard 115
th
Infantry Medical Company. He retired in 1996 from the commercial heating and air conditioning field. He enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to country and blue grass music. He learned to play the mandolin later in his life, and often played during church services at Marvin Chapel UMC where he was a member. He also loved fishing on the bay with family, watching baseball, football and NASCAR. Paul had been a member of the Knights of Pythias, Forest Oak Lodge #123, Gaithersburg for 45 years.
The family will receive visitors at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8. E. Ridgeville Blvd, Mt. Airy, MD on Saturday, September 3 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. The funeral will follow at 12:00 pm, with burial at Marvin Chapel Cemetary. Rev. Earl Mason of Marvin Chapel UMC will preside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marvin Chapel UMC and Hospice of Frederick.
