Paul O. Merchant, age 89, of Baltimore, MD, beloved husband of Dorothy N. Merchant (nee Taulton), passed to eternal life on March 03, 2015 at 2:20PM.  Born July 23, 1925 in Baltimore, Paul was the son of the late Lanna O. and Dorothy M. Wilt Merchant.
Paul and Dorothy married on May 5, 1945 and resided in Baltimore where they raised their family.  In 1987, at the age of 62, Paul retired from the U.S. Postal Service as Manager of the Rosedale Branch of the Baltimore Post Office.  Shortly thereafter, Paul and Dorothy moved to Hagerstown, MD where in their retirement years they enjoyed traveling, attending local dances in the Baltimore and Hagerstown areas, and volunteering at the local college.  Paul also enjoyed photography and accumulated a large collection of photographs to commemorate the couple’s many travels.
Paul served in the U.S. Army in WWII in Europe, 87th Infantry Division and received the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Metal, European Theater Ribbon, 3 Battle Stars, Good Conduct Metal, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Metal and the Korean Service Ribbon.  Paul retired from the United States Army at the rank of Lt. Colonel after 41 years of service.
Paul was a member of the Retired Officers Association, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6506, Baltimore County, MD, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Funkstown, MD,  a member of AM Vets. Post 10, Hagerstown, MD, a member of AARP, and member of American Legion Post 202 of Williamsport Md.
Paul is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy, and two brothers, Kenneth and George Merchant.  He is survived by his sister Kathryn E. Baker of Lovettsville, VA; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Paul T. and Sandra Merchant, and Mark O. Merchant; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon and Roger Karsk, Dawn and Thomas Capino, and Lisa Merchant; five grandchildren and a great grandson: Crystal Rawlings, Amanda and Paul A. Merchant, Alexandra and Melanie Bindon and Dalton Stewart.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 10th from 6:00-8:00pm at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Ave., Brunswick, MD.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 11th at 11:00am at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 13266 Taylorstown Rd., Leesburg, VA 20176.  The family will be present to receive friends one-half hour prior to the service time.  Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant UMC Cemetery.
