Paul Lane, Sr.

Paul Rankin Bradshaw Lane, Sr. age 86, born in Cordova, Alabama, October 15, 1927, son of the late Leslie Ellsworth Lane and Candace Viola Rankin Lane. Until his retirement in 1987, Mr. Lane was a public affairs office for the Department of Health,
Education and Welfare, Healthcare Finance Administration. In the early sixties, he worked for the Cuban Refugee Program’s Office of the Secretary,
HEW in Miami, Florida. Later, he was assigned to the program’s Washington office. He returned to the Miami office. He returned to the Miami office of the refugee program in 1968 as the Assistant Director for public affairs.
During his tenure with the Cuban Refugee Program he managed programs to develop employment and resettlement for Cuban refugees. He was deeply involved with the repatriation of Bay of Pigs prisoners, their education, job placement and military occupations. He also had program responsibility for retraining and licensing of Cuban exile physicians, dentists and teachers. While in Washington, he oversaw the Cuban Student Loan Program administered by the Office of Education, HEW.
Mr. Lane served in the Navy during World War 2 in amphibious warfare. After discharge in 1946, he resided in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was also enrolled at the Georgia Military Academy in College Park, Georgia.
After the War, he traveled to Cuba and Mexico where his parents resided. While in Mexico he attended Mexico City College where he eventually received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Journalism. He also was employed for three years by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Husbandry as a livestock inspector with the Joint Mexico-American Commission to eradicate the hoof and mouth disease.
He is survived by his wife Donna of 42 years, daughters Candace “Candy Lee” Michael and Catherine Lisle “Lislet” Mejia of San Antonio, Texas, Amy Maria Reierson Lane Weeks in Centennial, Colorado and sons Paul R.B. Lane, Jr and Daniel Craig Ellsworth Lane, Bothell, Washington. Grandchildren include Sammy and Thomas Lane, and Richard Anthony Mejia, granddaughters Tiana, Abigail Rose Weeks, Riley Page Candace Weeks, Aubrey Madeline Lucy Lane, Grace Kathryn Viola Lane and great-granddaughter Eleanor Quinn Mejia.
His marriages to Elizabeth Lee Eistetter of Mexico and Frances E. Staudt of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, ended in divorce.
