Paul Carter

d. August 21, 2015

On Friday, August 21, 2015, Paul A. Carter, 79, passed away at his home in Mount Airy, MD., after an 8 month battle with bladder cancer.
He is survived by his wife Karen Sparks, cousins Jim (Audry) Brown of Hampton, VA and Mamie Venable of Upper Marlboro, MD in addition to many second cousins; as well as step-children Sherman (Pati) Johnson, of Middletown, MD and Greg (Makur) Johnson of Iowa City, IA and Julie Johnson of Altoona, IA.  He is already missed by his adoring Doberman and Miniature Poodle.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Abner B. Carter and Clara L. Brown, and his first love, Karen Johnson.
Paul was born and raised in the Foxhall neighborhood of NW Washington DC.  He worked at Ross Veterinary Hospital on MacArthur Blvd., NW, as a certified vet. tech. for 17 years, before moving in 1973 to co-own Shady Spring Boarding Kennel with Karen Johnson.  When the kennel was sold in 1981, Paul stayed on as a groomer and driver for the home delivery service, and remained a beloved fixture there for 42 years until he became ill in January 2015.
There will be a celebration of his life on Sunday, October 4th, 2015 from 12:00 - 5:00pm.   This will be a casual gathering at Chien de Luxe, 5140 MacArthur Blvd., NW, Washington DC.
All of Paul’s Shady Spring clients are encouraged to bring their dogs.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Washington Animal Rescue League at www.warl.org.
