Oscar Summers

Oscar Filmore Summers (Uncle Oscar) passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg WV.  He was born August 30, 1934, son of the late Oscar M. and Annie E. (Hann) Summers.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 52 years; daughters, Rosemary Nichols and husband Jim of Lovettsville VA and Suzanne Saxton and husband Darrell of Thurmont; grandchildren Holly Nichols, Hunter Nichols, and Elaine Saxton.  Brothers:  Jim Summers of Smithburg, Frank and wife Ann Summers of Westminster, Sisters: Lydia Miller of Ijamsville, Phyllis Horman of Hagerstown, Betty Hayward of St. Louis MO and Evelyn Mossburg of Ijamsville. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by brothers Elwood Summers and Robert Summers and sisters Grace Schlesinger, Elsie Cole, Mary Keeney, Ruth Fisher, Frances Main and Annie Keeney.
Oscar worked in auto mechanics and auto body repairs, his early years at Key Chevrolet and Jones Motors.  Most recently, He restored antique tractors and machinery for Gladhill Tractor Mart.
Oscar served in the U.S. Army working in helicopter maintenance, was a member of the Bush Creek Brethren Church, the Big Oak Lodge and the Frederick Amvets, and was a founding member of the Tri-State Blue Grass Assoc.
He began playing music at the age of thirteen.  He played in various bands:  The Sandman Trio, The Bluegrass Image, Route 15 Express, and for 40 years managed The Glade Valley Travelers.  He enjoyed playing immensely and was dedicated to playing at nursing homes, churches, carnivals, festivals and reunions.  He, with his mandolin, was known as “Mr. Bluegrass” of Frederick County.  He loved miniature trains, attending steam engine shows, watching baseball, football, Nascar and old westerns.
He doted on his grandchildren and was very proud of each one of them.  He had his own unique sense of humor, which he amazingly kept throughout his brief illness.  He “kept the faith and finished the course,” II Timothy 4:7.
The family will receive friends Friday, June 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be held in the Stauffer Chapel Saturday, June 2 at 11:00 a.m.  with Dahl Drenning and Elza Hurst officiating.  Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.  Pallbearers will be Gary Summers, Larry Summers, Buck Fisher, Jimmy Wiles, Brian Wiles and Scott Burall.  Honorary pallbearers are Darrell Saxton, Jim Nichols, Bruce Wiles, Alfred Wiles and Robert Wiles.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VA Medical Center at 510 Butler Ave., Martinsburg WV, 25405.
