Oliver Jerry Hatcher Jr., born on January 11, 1945, was called home to be with the Father on July 15, 2024. He was born in Mount Airy, NC to Oliver Jerry Hatcher Sr. and Sadie Irene Cox-Hatcher. He was their second child and son.
Jerry graduated from JJ Jones High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from North Carolina Central University (Central). He was drafted into the US Army and after completion of basic training, he was deployed to Thailand. He was transferred back to the US and honorably discharged after the death of his oldest sibling, Clayburn M. Hatcher, who was serving in Vietnam at the same time. After his discharge, he began working for State Farm Insurance Company (State Farm) on 11-3-1969. as an entry level Claims Adjuster in the Washington DC metro area. He retired from State Farm on 10-01-2006 as the Mid-Atlantic Region Claims Manager where he was responsible for managing the operation and performance of all State Farm Claims Offices in the Region.
Jerry married Zephra Sue Huges. Sue was born in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. The legend is that Jerry and Sue were childhood sweethearts in the early elementary school grades. They separated when her mother, Mrs. Rosella Huges moved her family to Harrisburg PA. They reunited and dated as adults after Jerry graduated from Central and moved to Steelton PA to work prior to his being drafted.
Jerry joined Chestnut Progressive Primative Baptist Church at an early age. Until his passing, his faith and love of Jesus Christ never died. His music of choice whether on TV, in his car or at home were hymns, spirituals and old school gospel.
Jerry was an avid golfer. His golf clubs were a permanent fixture in his car; and he played at every opportunity. He participated in local and company golf tournaments and even placed or won a few. He also loved his birthplace and built a retirement home on the farm where he was raised. He would come home often and in his later years regularly attended the Hatcher Family Reunion. The home was a retreat for he and his siblings.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife: Zephra Sue Huges-Hatcher, two sons - Oliver Jerry (OJ) Hatcher III and Christopher Leroy (Chris), two granddaughters - Kanave Ray Green and Olivia Sue Hatcher, his sister, Kathy Sue Hatcher, three brothers - Robert Lee, Phillip Quincy (wife Carolyn) and Mark A. Hatcher, a sister-in-law - Gail Hatcher (deceased brother Timothy and their children and grandchildren), a step-mother - Santha Louis Hatcher, an Aunt and uncle Romain Brown-Hooper and Rev. Leo Cox (wife Gloria), and a host of cousins.
