Mrs. Nettie E. Watkins, 100, of Mt. Airy, died on Saturday October 8, 2011. She was the wife of the late Calvin S. Watkins who died in 1973.
Born on March 12, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and George H. Burdette of Mt. Airy. Her mother died when Nettie was only 18 months old and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Marcellous and Nettie Watkins until she was 9 years old and then raised to adulthood by Rosie and Dewey Brown of Mt. Airy. She attended a one room schoolhouse in Claggetsville.
She was a homemaker and loving mother and a wonderful pie maker. She was a lifelong member of Montgomery United Methodist Church since 1929.
She is survived by one daughter, Rosie Elaine Cordell and her husband Bernard of Mt. Airy. She is also survived by her nephews, Carty Lawson, Teddy Lawson, Herman Sirk Jr., and Joseph Knott II. A niece, Nancy Mackenzie. Her extended family Shirley Devilbiss and family, Darlene Hernandez and family and Donna Schoenburg and family. She will be remembered by her caregivers, Jean Daymude, Dawn Whetzel, Cara Day, Debbie Ruppert and Jean Kingsley. Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her step-mother, Mary Etta Duvall Burdette and her three brothers, Raymond Burdette, John W. Burdette, George M. Burdette and her four sisters, Lillie Miles, Carrie Knott, Nicie Sokol and Mary Elizabeth Sirk. Nettie was the last of her immediate family.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 & 7-9pm on Thursday October 13, at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus, where services will be held at 11:00am on Friday October 14, 2011. Reverend Bud Kibby and Reverend Wade Martin will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Herb Schoenberg, George Easterday, Joseph Knott, David Easterday, Steve Hash and Kenneth Reader. Honorary bearer will be Frankie Easterday.
