Nellie H. Snell, age 89, of Frederick, MD, passed away at Edenton Retirement Community on May 1, 2011 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Walkersville, MD, September 15, 1921, the daughter of Edith May Crum and Raymond M. Hummer, Sr.
Survivors include a brother, J. Elwood Hummer and wife Bernadine; sister-in-law, Hallie Hummer; nieces and nephews Douglas E. Hummer and friend Jo Bennett, Robert D. Hummer and wife Joy, Raymond M. Hummer III and wife Joan, and Sherry Pencola and husband James; great nieces and nephews Jan Hummer and husband Chris Shugrue, Raymond Hummer IV and wife Theresa, Ryan Hummer and wife Carrie, and Lauren Pencola; and great-great nieces and nephews Delia Shugrue, Brendan Hummer, Hallie Hummer, and Raymond Michael Hummer. Other survivors include close friends Dick and Jean Donnelly and Claudia Salas.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Edward Snell of Eagle River, MI, and a brother Raymond M. Hummer, Jr.
Mrs. Snell graduated from Walkersville High School and furthered her education by attending Lucy Webb Hayes Nursing School in Washington, DC. She graduated in 1942 as a nurse and worked at Sibley Hospital, Washington, DC, and Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA, for 45 years.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Nellie Snell will be held on Thursday, May 5, at 11:00 am at Glade United Church of Christ, Walkersville, MD, with Pastor Philip Curran officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro, MD.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to Glade United Church of Christ Improvement Fund, PO Box 2236, 22 Fulton Ave, Walkersville , MD 21793. Funeral services arranged by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick, MD 21702.
