Nancy E. McCartney (Smith)

Nancy E. McCartney (Smith), 85, of Middletown, MD passed away on August 9, 2024. She most recently had been a resident of Sunrise of Frederick, in their dementia care unit.

Nancy was born June 2, 1939 in New Market, MD to the late Earl and Mary Smith. She graduated with her RN degree and worked at Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore. She married Darrell Matthew McCartney in 1962. As their family grew, Nancy took a break from nursing. After her children were older, she returned to nursing at Washington County Hospital, and then found her niche at Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick where she worked for many years before retiring. 

Once Nancy retired, she enjoyed life eating out. Especially after Darrell passed, she could be found most mornings eating breakfast at the old Barbara Fritchie Restaurant and enjoying the group of friends who gathered there.

Nancy is survived by her three children; Darrell(Matt)McCartney Jr and wife Rhonda, Karen Disque and husband Ron, and Diane Gabry and husband Greg; grandchildren Monica and husband Rusty, Holly and husband Dillan and Natalie and husband Brandon; and Great-grandchildren Holley and Artemis.

Nancy was predeceased by her siblings Earl Smith Jr, Pauline Boone, Shirley Favorite, Margaret Elliott, Merridy Deater, Sonny Smith, Barbara Main-Rossen, and Jean Silvers.

A memorial service will be held August 16, 2024 at 11 am at Stauffer Funeral Home on Opossumtown Pike. The family will receive friends starting at 10am. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Frederick County.
